Technical Director (Theatre)

The Cambridge School of Weston seeks a Technical Director (Theatre) for the 2025-2026 school year. The school seeks to appoint a Technical Director in support of design, production, and technology across all the performing arts departments (theatre, dance, and music), as well as other areas of school life. The Technical Director will be a member of the Theatre department and report directly to the Theatre Department Chair. The position requires general knowledge in theatre design and production (scenery, lighting, and sound design; scenic construction and painting; light hang and focus; sound engineering; and production management), with additional knowledge and/or interest in current and emerging theatre and production technology helpful. The ability to supervise students in safe practices of scenic construction is a must. 

A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills; will value progressive, student-centered education; will demonstrate an ability to make strong connections with students; will be passionate about teaching creative students with a variety of learning styles in a boarding and day school environment; and will have experience in differentiating and working in multiple modalities. Essential Functions of this Position Include: 

  • Serve as Technical Director for our fall play, winter intensive, and spring musical productions. 
  • Design the scenery in collaboration with the director and complete timely technical draftings for the fall play and spring musical to professional building standards. 
  • Mentor, lead, and supervise students in the safe and timely construction of all scenic elements for all productions. 
  • Mentor, lead, and supervise students in the sound and lighting design and open captioning for all productions. 
  • Create design and production calendars and adhere to deadlines. 
  • Assist and manage all technical and design aspects of theatre, dance, and music department productions. 
  • Attend department and production meetings. 
  • Manage the A/V set-up for weekly all-school assemblies. 
  • Maintain the scenic shop, booth, Robin Wood Theatre, Moir Theatre, and all lighting equipment. 
  • Access the catwalk and lift heavy items as necessary 
  • Teach classes as assigned on design and computer drafting (VectorWorks and/or AutoCAD) 

Potential responsibilities include classroom teaching, advising, production management, design and support, A/V set-up and maintenance, and training students in the safe use of equipment. There is some flexibility to allow for additional responsibilities relating to specific areas of interest, such as multimedia design, accessibility, puppetry, etc. 

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Arts in Technical Theatre or equivalent required, or relevant professional experience and interest in education. 
  • High level of proficiency with Vectorworks and AutoCAD, or similar drafting software. 
  • Experience and practical knowledge of accepted, safe scenic construction methods, and A/V, lighting and sound systems. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to strong collaboration across and within departments. 
  • Ability and interest in making strong connections with students.
  • Ability to work within a team to meet production goals and timelines. 
  • Commitment to the values of progressive, student-centered education. 
  • Passion for teaching creative students with a variety of learning styles. 

Faculty at The Cambridge School of Weston also:

Through the PACE program (Promoting Awareness and Community Engagement), we dedicate time during the mod and the year for experiential classes, events, and activities that prepare our students to meet the demands of an increasingly complex and diverse world. A four-year co-curriculum, PACE has been designed to ensure that all CSW students develop self-awareness, social consciousness, healthy living habits, life skills, and leadership that will serve them into adulthood. 
  • Participate in up to two alliance/affinity groups, student clubs, or committees. 
  • Chaperone two weekend activities each year to support our student life programming. 
  • Candidates may express interest in working within our residential community (housing provided).
