Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,717.42 (In accordance with current spending restrictions, if the appointment is an internal promotion, the position will be filled at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever higher.)
This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all duties responsibly, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model, and treat all persons with dignity and respect. Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, staff, and others while ensuring that detained youth are provided their constitutional rights, especially concerning legal, medical, and mental health issues.
Assists in the operation of a secure detention center and ensures compliance with court orders and departmental policies. Successfully completes required training and maintains proficiency in distributing medications. Performs duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as necessary.
Supervises youth, maintains control through directives and appropriate use of Protective Action Response (PAR) as needed, and inspects for contraband. Trains and coaches employees, acts as supervisor when needed, and ensures documentation of violations of operating procedures, rules, and regulations.
Uses security and emergency equipment for safety, completes checks for confined or suicidal youth, and maintains youth counts as directed. Attends required training and meetings, maintains a valid Driver License, and complies with section 215.422, Florida Statutes.
Required entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities include communication skills, basic math, report maintenance, and the ability to work with youth and maintain hygiene. Knowledge of facility policies and the ability to follow instructions, determine force levels, and observe behavioral changes is essential.
All prospective candidates will undergo background checks and drug screening. Positions require a valid driver’s license and may involve transporting youth. Successful candidates must be certified in accordance with Florida's Department of Juvenile Justice training policy.
