Job Description

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, The Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration and Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer and oversees Race to Justice, the Agency's internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to better address racial health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. CHECW sits under the Agency's Chief Medical Officer. The Bureau of Equitable Health Services is the healthcare systems bureau of DOHMH. Our mission is to apply policy, evidence, and practical expertise to improve equity in health care delivery at the individual, organizational, and systems levels. We do this by engaging primary care providers and other healthcare organizations to implement evidence-based strategies; leveraging information to support planning and technical assistance for providers and payers; advancing policy to close the racial equity gap for priority health outcomes; and surfacing opportunities where health care can influence and connect consumers to social support and addressing the whole person, beyond physical ailments. Located within the BEHS, the Office of Healthcare Systems Strategy and Accountability (OHSSA) advances innovative initiatives to improve healthcare delivery, financing, and strategy in New York City.


The Bureau of Equitable Health Services is seeking a Healthcare System Qualitative Research Analyst. This position will be responsible for conducting healthcare system stakeholder engagement through formal listening sessions, focus groups, surveys, and interviews, using findings to inform program and policy design, and managing communication strategies.


DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • Management of recruitment for qualitative studies, including the development of recruitment material, screening participant eligibility, coordinating and scheduling participants for focus groups, listening sessions and surveys and preparing focus group spaces with materials as needed.
  • Data management, including ensuring the completeness and accuracy of data, managing transcription and ensuring security of data, managing transcription and ensuring security of data in compliance with IRB protocols. Support the writing and submission of IRB protocols for qualitative projects.
  • Conduct analysis, assist with research methodology.
  • Project management including tracking the progress of project deliverables, coordinating and preparing materials for project meetings.
  • Represent the OHSSA research team with collaborators and external vendors.
  • Support project development, conduct literature reviews, and use innovative data visualization techniques.
  • Assist with the development of reports, data summaries, policy briefs/memos, visualizations, abstracts, conference posters, manuscripts and other deliverables. Work in close collaboration with the policy team to translate qualitative research findings into development of program and policy initiatives.
  • Work in close collaboration with other data, research, and evaluation teams across the bureau and agency to build knowledge of Healthcare Accountability data sets and research goals.
PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • MPH or other advanced degree with emphasis on health policy, healthcare management, health disparities.
- Experience in qualitative research or related field with 1-2 years working experience, preferably in healthcare (can be in any setting -payor, provider, academic, government, consulting, technology, etc.) and demonstrated understanding of the U.S. healthcare system.
Qualitative analytical skills, experience with interviewing, focus groups, or community-engaged research.

  • Experience with Nvivo, Atlas.ti, Dedoose or other QDA software.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Willingness to adapt to new data structures and tackle novel problems creatively.
  • Working knowledge of or interest in a range of public health topics.
  • Comfortable with shifting deadlines and priorities.
  • Passion for social justice and the public good.

Minimum Qualifications


1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
