Overview
The Director of Baseball Operations is responsible for managing all aspects of Baseball Operations, including new program business development as well as overseeing the everyday operations of baseball activities. This position reports directly to the General Manager, Cooperstown All Star Village (CASV) and is located onsite at CASV.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Staff Management
- Strategically direct the Baseball Operations department to ensure exceptional team member and guest experiences.
- Recruit, hire, coach, motivate, and develop a team that is aligned with CASV’s goals and values.
- Develop leaders within Baseball Operations to improve leadership within current roles and prepare for increased responsibility and succession.
- Lead the summer internship program, including recruitment, comprehensive training, scheduling, and managing intern housing.
- Oversee schedules and timekeeping, ensuring adequate staff coverage.
- Supervise the recruitment and scheduling of umpires, ensuring thorough training on CASV rules and regulations.
Tournament Operations
- Oversee the creation and management of tournament brackets/schedules, ensuring seamless adjustments for weather or team changes, and effectively communicate updates to all relevant parties.
- Manage game logistics, including scoreboards, inventory, stats tracking, and the distribution of coaches' scorecards.
- Maintain consistent communication with coaches, staff, and customers via WhatsApp, radios, and other tools.
- Organize Opening Day logistics, including check-in, uniform distribution, and setup for the skills competition, managing staff assignments and trophy presentations.
- Oversee team bunkhouse placements to ensure specific team/player needs are met.
- Develop, implement, and enforce CASV rules regarding game timing, lineup exchanges, and age verification.
- Arrange and manage mascot appearances, ensuring safety and performance quality.
Field & Equipment Management
- Manage all aspects of field maintenance ensuring fields present a the highest level throughout the season.
- Supervise all field preparations and equipment setup, including baseballs, water stations, radios, and iPads.
- Oversee video streaming setup and operations, minimizing downtime and ensuring clear communication with customers.
Financial Management
- Manage Baseball Operations labor daily to ensure efficient and effective staffing levels are maintained.
- Supervise the financial aspects of baseball operations, including budgeting and expense tracking.
- Effectively manage inventory for player uniforms, umpire apparel, and baseballs.
- Oversee uniform ordering for players, coaches, and staff.
Business Development & Customer Relations
- Work with the sales team to identify new business opportunities and expand CASV’s programs and partnerships.
- Address on-site customer issues and provide follow-up feedback to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Cultivate strong relationships with clients and organizations to ensure exceptional service and satisfaction.
Medical & Safety Protocols
- Work with internal and external partners to ensure completion of player medical registration processes, with all protocols in place for player safety.
- Oversee medical/nursing staff to manage player allergies, medications, and on-site medical needs.
- Ensure all required employee, umpire, and coach background checks are completed.
Special Event Coordination
- Organize special events, such as the MLB Ambassador Program, Opening Day Ceremonies, and additional on-site activations, ensuring smooth logistics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a sports-related discipline or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in playing and coaching baseball and managing sports tournaments.
- 3+ years of experience in a business development capacity.
- Ability to manage, plan, organize, implement, and execute at a high level.
- Customer-focused attitude.
- Ability to handle many tasks simultaneously.
- Superior interpersonal skills.
- Strong work ethic and self-motivated.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work with children, demonstrating patience, empathy, and understanding.
Working Conditions / Special Physical Requirements:
- Routinely required to work extended hours.
- Physical ability to accomplish all tasks.
- Routinely lift or move up to 50 pounds at least 20% of the time.
- Routinely exposed to extreme hot/cold weather conditions.
