Description The Hampden County Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Adult Basic Education Teacher to teach our justice-involved population. The grant-funded position is full-time, and the teacher is responsible for providing individualized and group instruction for students participating in the education program. The ELA Instructor (Teacher VII) will be responsible for teaching ELA content and literacy skills at all levels including Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE), following the guidelines set forth by the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) utilizing essential components of reading and writing instruction and Evidence-based Reading Instruction (EBRI). In addition, the instructor will be responsible for administering the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Locator for student placement and the MA Adult Proficiency Test (MAPT) for assessment to students participating in the education program.
Work Schedule :
Monday through Friday: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Flexibility needed to work some evening hours (as requested) Tuesday/Thursday based on student needs. Flexibility of hours based on operational requirements
Qualifications :
- A bachelor's degree in a related field with two (2) or more years of experience as a classroom teacher is required; experience in adult basic education or correctional education program is required.
- Bilingual skills are desirable (English/Spanish).
- Must possess a primary, secondary, or ABE teacher license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, preferably with an ELA endorsement.
- Understanding of essential components of reading and writing instruction including Evidence Based Reading Instruction (EBRI) and/or Student Achievement in Reading (STAR).
- Experience teaching ELA to students preparing for the high school equivalency (HSE) exam.
- Knowledge of educational assessments including TABE and MAPT
- Familiarity with the College and Career Readiness Standard for Adult Education.
- Experience teaching literacy skills using a contextualized curriculum relevant to the student's experience and background.
- Working knowledge of Windows-based applications, educational software, and SMART board technology.
